Mock and Saw

The brouhaha over the Abu Ghraib abuse pictures has been put into grisly perspective with the beheading of an American hostage in Iraq.

The story is tragically reminiscent of the Daniel Pearl murder: the captive, a civilian guilty of nothing more than a U.S. citizenship, was paraded before cameras; then his head was sawed off with a knife and held up by the masked terrorists as a trophy of their kill. Finally, the video was uploaded onto the internet by a web-savvy Islamo-fascist and posted on an Arabic website.

The liberal media sirens have been wailing relentlessly over the past week about the maltreatment of Iraqi prisoners at the hands of American soldiers. And they're probably right to make an issue of it.

But amid the hoopla, we must keep in mind the relative insignificance of those crimes when juxtaposed with the colossal horrors of our enemies. The abuse and humiliation of Iraqi detainees, after all, pales in comparison to the unspeakable savagery that was visited on Nick Berg. Being stripped and forced into degrading poses is simply nothing compared to this:

Sex O'Clock

Swatch, the Swiss watchmaker, has embarked on a racy new ad campaign for its 'Bunnysutra' wristwatch that's sure to rile up the nation's watchful prudes.

As if rabbits hadn't suffered enough embarrassment lately, the ads will feature drawings of innocent little bunnies in explicit sexual positions. Er, what's up, Doc?

Wascally Wabbits
New Swatch ad features rabbits in sexual positions

May 10, 2004 -- Times Square tourists are blushing over a controversial new Swatch billboard that depicts six pairs of cute little rabbits in X-rated poses.
"Touch your swatch, pick your position" states the ad atop 1528 Broadway at the corner of West 45th Street.

The billboard kicks off the new "Bunnysutra" Swatch line that features the company's new touch technology. When touched, the clock hands land on "happy bunny positions," a Swatch press release states.

Most Times Square visitors walking by the racy new ad were shocked to see pictures of boinking bunnies above the new and improved, family-friendly New York attraction.

"Oh, my God. That's disgusting," said Pat Pearson, 40 of Mahwah, N.J. "We have enough sexual implications in the world. Why are you going to use these animals having sex?"

A Florida tourist on her first visit to New York agreed.

"I have two children, and I would not want them to see that," said Ann Childs, 33, of Lakeland, Fla. "What do I tell them when they ask about what those bunnies are doing? It's awful."

Another mother from Logandale, Nev., echoed the sentiment.

"I am offended. That is so rude," said Jessica Whipple, who has six children. "I am not going to buy Swatch."

New Yorkers, on the other hand, saw no problem.

"It's funny," said Michael Messina, 46, a manager of a publishing company in Manhattan. "It's not screaming sex in your face - it's love."

A spokesperson for Swatch Group US said, "Swatch is always very tongue in cheek. This is a playful, fun ad."

Playful, indeed...
